Mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Diagnosing mesothelioma is often difficult because symptoms typically appear 15 to 30 to 60 or more years after exposure to asbestos. Those symptoms are similar to other illnesses.
At Brayton Purcell LLP, we encourage people who have been exposed to asbestos to pay close attention to their health. If you have experienced symptoms that may be an early stage of mesothelioma, it is important to tell your doctor that you have been exposed to asbestos. Our law offices are in Northern California, Southern California, Utah and Oregon, and our legal practice spans the entire nation. Contact us for a free initial consultation about your case.
Illnesses With Similar Symptoms
The most common form of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma, affects the respiratory system. As a result, the early stages of cancer may exhibit symptoms similar to a cold, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia. Other, less-common forms of mesothelioma have symptoms similar to other illnesses.
The most common symptoms of mesothelioma include:
- Pleural mesothelioma: Dry cough, wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, harsh breathing sounds
- Peritoneal mesothelioma: Abdominal pain, abdominal enlargement, tenderness of the abdominal area, loss of appetite
- Pericardial mesothelioma: Difficulty breathing, chest pain
- Testicular mesothelioma: Lump in the testes
Without knowledge of your work history and exposure to asbestos, doctors may often misdiagnose mesothelioma as another illness with similar symptoms.
