Byetta is a medication used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, often in conjunction with a drug such as Januvia. Unlike Januvia, which is taken orally, Byetta is a twice-daily injectable drug. Combined with diet and exercise, the medication works to control blood sugar within diabetic patients by helping insulin production.
Byetta is often prescribed to overweight or obese patients with Type 2 diabetes, since it has been reported to help with weight loss. Although it was approved by the FDA in 2005, serious side effects can occur with its use.
Like Januvia, Byetta use is associated with severe side effects including pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a condition that causes the pancreas to become inflamed and swell, which can lead to hospitalization and possibly death. A Byetta user is 49 times more likely to report pancreatitis than users of other drugs in the same class.
Pancreatic cancer has also been reported in Byetta users. In more than 80 percent of pancreatic cancer cases, tumors spread to other organs in the patient's body. This makes the survival rate of Byetta users diagnosed with pancreatic cancer very low.
