Defective Consumer Products and the CPSC

Boombox Silenced

WASHINGTON, DC -- May 4, 2007 -- Are you tired of hearing other people's blaring boomboxes on the beach, or are you a music fan who thinks they are great inventions? Either way, silence now ensues, at least for 13,800 Coby brand USB/MP3/CD boomboxes. They have been recalled by the ultimate boombox arbiter, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or CPSC.

A Coby boombox can cause a fire if it is left plugged into an electrical outlet and its off switch is not firmly in position. Coby has received 18 reports of boomboxes that have overheated or caused property damage (CPSC News, April 24, 2007).

Unfortunately, it's not just boomboxes that can strike a sour note. Items ranging from kitchen gadgets to children's toys to major appliances have been implicated in serious personal injuries and property damage. The CPSC web site includes extensive lists of these recalled products .
