On July 30, 2014, a Wisconsin renovation company was fined $47,272 for failing to properly remove asbestos from a facility in the town of Menasha. The PJC Group LLC (PJC) purchased the former Gilbert Paper Company facility back in 2004, and planned to renovate and demolish different parts of the property.
PJC hired an outside contractor to remove metal from the facility but the job was done improperly, with asbestos-containing pipe insulation improperly removed. Workers were alleged to have left this insulation within the mill on the property, as well as fail to properly inspect different areas for asbestos before disturbing more asbestos-containing materials.
"PJC and the workers allegedly failed to notify the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) about the activity in the boiler house building, failed to inspect the area for asbestos and failed to take proper asbestos safeguards before and after disturbing the materials."
The $47,272 fine includes forfeitures, costs, and surcharges.
