Lung Cancer Awareness Month at Brayton Purcell

Brayton Purcell LLP is proud to spread lung cancer awareness in November and beyond. Not only are we avid supporters of the American Lung Association (we are already forming our team for the next Fight for Air Climb in San Francisco!), we know how devastating the disease can be for individuals and families across the nation.

Since it is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we thought we would share a few facts about lung cancer and how it can be related to asbestos, a mineral found within our earth:

For those that have been exposed to asbestos, smoking tobacco can increase the risk for developing lung cancer significantly. Because the likelihood of contracting lung cancer is dose-dependent, every exposure to these deadly substances increases your disease potential.

Even without asbestos exposure, lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in America for both men and women. It was estimated that 224,210 individuals were to be diagnosed with the disease in 2014, and unnecessary asbestos exposure on the job and at home will only help that number rise.

If you are a smoker who knows they have been exposed to asbestos in the past, you should alert your doctor to the possibility of a lung cancer diagnosis at some point in your lifetime. Quitting smoking might be a wise choice as well, considering it can immediately add years onto your life.
