[Memorial Day] Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

If you have not paused lately to reflect on the many sacrifices American soldiers have made for our country, today is the perfect day to do so. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States created to remember the people who have died in our country's armed forces.

What many people do not realize is how many soldiers have fallen to asbestos-related diseases due to exposure during their time of service. As a result of exposure to asbestos during their service, many veterans suffer from asbestos-related diseases that end up being fatal. Deadly illnesses include asbestosis, lung cancer, and malignant mesothelioma.

While veterans make up about 8% of our nation's population, they also comprise about 30% of all mesothelioma deaths in the country. That means 1 out of 3 of those who have died from mesothelioma has been a military vet. If they survived their time of service, they might not have escaped the deadly effects of past asbestos exposure.

Many veterans are eligible for compensation from the asbestos manufacturers and companies that are responsible for their exposure. Reaching out to an asbestos or mesothelioma lawyer immediately after diagnosis is the best way to ensure they receive the justice they deserve.

Today, as we remember those who lost their lives in the military, let us also acknowledge those that have been affected by asbestos exposure during their time of service. With mesothelioma survival rates spanning only one to two years after diagnosis, they too deserve to be remembered for their actions overseas and at home.
