3 Asbestos-Containing Products Present at Home

You might be surprised to learn that many products found around the home have been made with asbestos fibers. Since the substance has been worked into over 3,000 consumer products, it is no wonder so many Americans are affected by exposure each year. Let's take a look at some of the household products asbestos can be found within:

You may not have realized during your back-to-school shopping that you were purchasing a hazardous product for your child. Recently, several brands of children's crayons tested positive for asbestos contamination. The Environmental Working Group has made it clear to avoid these brands for your child's safety:

Amscan Crayons
Disney Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Crayons
Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Crayons
Saban's Power Rangers Super Megaforce Crayons

Automobile Brakes

If you own an older vehicle, it's likely that the brakes contain asbestos. Professional and DIY mechanics are advised by OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to follow strict procedures for repairing and working with brake pads and linings.

Slow Cookers (aka Crock-PotsĀ®)

Asbestos can be found in many products within the kitchen due to high cooking temperatures. Slow cookers, or Crock-PotsĀ®, are just one of these items. The substance can be found in the linings of their metal housings. A newer model of slow cooker is less likely to contain asbestos compared to one from the 1970s or earlier.

Some of the most common products found within the home have been known to contain asbestos. Do you own one of the items listed above?

My son has really bad asthma and so our doctor has told us that we should make sure that our home doesn't have any asbestos in it. However, we do have a lot of art supplies and I don't think that I could have ever imagined crayons could have this substance in them. Thank you so much for listing the four brands that we should make sure to avoid, because now I will definitely make sure that we do not bring any more of them into the house.

Isn't it shocking, Faylinn? Thank you for your comment. We are glad this post could help!
