3 Types of People Affected by Asbestos

Despite the Occupational Health and Safety Administration stating that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure for any type of asbestos fiber, the use of the substance is still legal in the United States. There are many different individuals who have been exposed or risk coming into contact with the substance every day. Let's find out who some of them are:

The World Health Organization estimates that 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos in the workplace. This exposure can lead to debilitating diseases, such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer for the worker and their families. With multiple blue collar trades at risk for coming into contact with the substance on the job, it is time to eliminate this threat on workers' lives by banning asbestos use today.

It is estimated that 30% of mesothelioma deaths in the United States are comprised of military veterans. Veterans are likely to have been exposed to asbestos during their time of service, which have made them some of those most at risk for an asbestos-related medical condition. While asbestos use has been phased out of the military, asbestos-containing materials can still be found in shipyards, army bases, and other places where military personnel spend their time.

It is not just vets and workers at high risk for asbestos-related diseases. Children are at risk for coming into contact with asbestos in older school buildings. Nearly half of America's schools were built at the height of asbestos use, making deteriorating materials a serious hazard for children at school.

Do you fall into one of the categories listed above? If so, you might be at high risk for a mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis diagnosis in your lifetime. Sharing your possible exposure history with a medical professional will help them more accurately track your health and assess related symptoms.

It was previous stated that an estimated 30% of mesothelioma victims are military veterans. We have corrected this statement to reflect the fact that it is 30% of those who have died from mesothelioma who are military veterans ( Thank you.
