About Cancer and Asbestos
Exposure to asbestos can cause these cancers:
- Lung cancer
- Pleural mesothelioma (an aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs)
- Non–Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes and spleen, often called just “lymphoma”)
- Cancer of the digestive tract
- Colon cancer
- Cancer of the throat or larynx
- Kidney cancer
Some of these cancers are difficult to diagnose. For example, the early symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include difficulty in breathing (dyspnea), pain in the chest, and hoarseness, which may be signs of other respiratory diseases. Lung cancer symptoms, which are not initially present in many cases, include a persistent cough, chest pain, hoarseness, weight loss, and bloody sputum or spit. Again, these symptoms are not unique to lung cancer. To make an accurate diagnosis, the doctor performs tests such as chest x–rays, CT scans and tissue sampling.
