Adderall® is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD in adults and children. However, Adderall® has been linked to deaths, heart attacks, and strokes. Canada pulled the medication from the market after 20 Adderall® users died suddenly and 12 suffered strokes (Canada Health Advisory, February 9, 2005). Although Canada later allowed Adderall® sales, it issued new warning labels for the drug.
Adderall® is an amphetamine, a type of drug that is an addictive stimulant. Overuse of amphetamines can cause heart attacks or deaths, according to a prominent, black–box warning on Adderall®’s US packaging. Even the usual, recommended doses of Adderall® have led to deaths and heart attacks in some people. Other Adderall® side effects include decreased appetite, increased blood pressure, headaches, and sleep problems.
You may want to discuss various ADHD treatment alternatives with your doctor if you or your child take Adderall®. Other types of drugs are available to treat ADHD, each with their own risks and benefits. Education and therapy may also be useful. Adults with ADHD may seek counseling and help with time management. A child with ADHD may get support from teachers, parents, and doctors.
