Bassinets Recalled Due to Strangulation Hazard

by Brayton Purcell LLP | Sep 4, 2009 | Product Liability

Two More Infant Deaths Cause CPSC to Reissue Recall on Simplicity Convertible Bassinets

September 4, 2009 — After two more deaths related to the Simplicity bassinet 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reissued a recall originally issued on August 28, 2008. The two recent infant deaths bring the total to four that CPSC is aware of.

The trouble appears to be a design flaw–a metal bar covered by a fabric flap and secured with Velcro®. When the bassinet is used next to a bed, it was intended that the flap be partially removed. Unfortunately, if done incorrectly there is a possibility that the infant may slip between the mattress and metal bar and strangle. Additionally, if the flap is not refastened correctly, it may create a pocket where the baby’s head may become entrapped causing suffocation.

The faulty bassinets, manufactured before May 18, 2008, include those manufactured and sold under the Graco brand from 2001 to 2004. Model numbers for the recalled Graco bassinets include: 3000CL, 3010HAV, 3011WHE, 3011WHK, 3014NGS, 3016LAU, 3017NCB, 3025C, 3030SAR, 3050SAR, 3111DPC, 3111ZOL, 3112DOH, 3122TGT, 5730FKB, 5750SAR, 8393 according to Graco’s recall statement .

Simplicity brand 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets with the defect were manufactured and sold between the years of 2002 and 2008 with Disney-licensed Winnie the Pooh characters printed on the fabric. Model numbers include: 3000, 3010, 3011, 3012, 3013, 3014, 3015, 3016, 3017, 3020, 3025, 3026, 3027, 3030, 3040, 3045, 3046, 3047, 3050, 3060, 3070, 3111, 3112, 343-8363, 343-8399, 5730, 5750, 8383, 9250 and TD250 according to the CPSC.
