Death Toll from Medical Negligence Reaches New High

by Brayton Purcell LLP | Apr 2, 2014 | Medical Malpractice

Do you put complete trust in your doctor? Many patients who are admitted to hospitals believe that the medical professional in charge of their treatment is providing it in a competent and responsible way. Most are unaware that an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 patients die each year from medical errors, and even more are subjected to malpractice and live to tell about it.

Medical negligence comes in many forms and happens constantly. From giving the wrong does of prescription drugs to leaving tools within bodies during surgery, the negligent actions of doctors are being scrutinized by both patients and professionals alike.

A recent report by the Journal of Patient Safety revealed a “new, evidence-based estimate of patient harms associated with hospital care.” Where in 1984, we were aware of up to 98,000 Americans dying from medical errors, today the number has been estimated to have almost quadrupled.

Those who have suffered from medical negligence are speaking out in different ways. The Troy and Alana Pack Patient Safety Act is in the process of qualifying to be a ballot measure to address medical negligence.

Other victims of medical malpractice seek legal help after the negligence has taken place. If you or a loved one has suffered at the hand of a medical professional, do not hesitate to contact an experienced attorney today. Seeking a lawyer familiar with medical malpractice cases is the best way to maximize compensation for your injuries.
