3 Rare Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

by Brayton Purcell LLP | Jun 9, 2014 | Mesothelioma

It is not uncommon for fatal diseases to develop within the bodies of those exposed to asbestos fibers. Any exposure to asbestos is dangerous, and prolonged exposure puts individuals at higher risk for cancers like mesothelioma.

Many of those who are diagnosed with the disease suffer from pleural mesothelioma, which affects the respiratory system within the patient. This is not the only type of mesothelioma, though. There are several more and some are more common than others. Let’s look at some of the rarest forms of mesothelioma out there today:

Testicular

Very little is known about testicular mesothelioma because it is so rare. What is known is that it attacks the membranes surrounding the testicles, which can lead to the formation of tumors. Testicular mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer and can recur after tumors have been removed.

Sarcomatoid

Another rare type of mesothelioma, and one of the most aggressive, is sarcomatoid mesothelioma. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma affects the patient’s pleura, the protective lining of their lungs, and accounts for 10 to 20 percent of all pleural cancers. The sarcomatoid cells can often be mistaken for other conditions, so alerting your doctor to any past asbestos exposure is essential.

Papillary

Papillary mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer usually found in the mesothelial lining of the abdomen. As opposed to other types of mesothelioma cancers, women are more likely to develop papillary mesothelioma than men, and tumors are treated as benign. It is one of the least aggressive mesothelioma cancers.

It would be wise to alert your doctor to any exposure to asbestos you have had in the past, as symptoms of mesothelioma are often mistaken for other medical conditions.

Have you been affected by a rare form of mesothelioma? Many patients are exposed to asbestos at the workplace and develop diseases that leave them unable to work or–even worse–dead. You might be entitled to compensation for those responsible for your illness, so do not hesitate to contact a mesothelioma attorney today.
