Many people think that the need to worry about asbestos exposure is over, but that could not be further from the truth. Recently, asbestos has been found in different brands of children’s crayons and toy fingerprint kits, putting kids at risk for exposure to the deadly carcinogen.

The crayons and fingerprint kits that have tested positive for asbestos are currently made in China and are imported to the United States. While asbestos might not have been deliberately added to the products – asbestos is often a contaminate in substances like talc – its presence poses a hazard to young children. Exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to serious and fatal respiratory diseases, including mesothelioma.

Asbestos was found to be present in EduScience Deluxe Forensics Lab Kits, Intelligence Secret Spy kits, and crayons such as Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Crayons. The contaminated products have been found at retailers such as Toys”R”Us, Dollar Tree Inc., and

There have been no announced recalls, despite the Environmental Working Group advising against children using the products. “We should never introduce toxic substances to products that children will be playing with – particularly carcinogens such as asbestos.”

Asbestos-related diseases can have latency periods of up to seventy years, and we would hate to see children today dealing with mesothelioma diagnoses tomorrow.
