What Mesothelioma Surgery Options are Available?

by Brayton Purcell LLP | Dec 16, 2015 | Mesothelioma

Around 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed every year in the United States. With so many individuals affected by the disease, doctors have been working to determine what treatment options are best for patients.

So far, no cure has been found for mesothelioma, but different surgery options have been shown to increase the survival rate and ease the symptoms of the disease. Two types of surgery available for those with mesothelioma are:

Pleurectomy and Decortication (PD)

PD involves removing the diseased pleural lining around the lungs, all or part of the diaphragm, the membrane surrounding the heart, and other at-risk tissues.

Extrapleural Pneumonectomy (EPP)

EPP is similar to PD, but involves removing the entire lung closest to the mesothelioma tumor, as well.

There are risks and benefits of both surgeries. If you are a mesothelioma patient looking to extend your life and relieve painful symptoms, speak with a mesothelioma doctor about your situation. A medical professional will be able to determine what treatment option is best for you based on several factors.
