Honoring Workers on Labor Day 2016

by Brayton Purcell LLP | Sep 2, 2016 | Workers' Rights

What kind of plans do you have for your Labor Day weekend? Labor Day is a national holiday that celebrates workers and their social and economic achievements.

The U.S. Department of Labor states that Labor Day is “a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” It was first recognized as a holiday after legislation was introduced in 1885-6. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. The holiday is now over one hundred years old.

Many people forget about the workplace hazards that workers have experienced throughout history. Prolonged exposure to asbestos, manganese, and other toxic substances put workers at risk for serious diseases and cancers. Some employers ignore OSHA guidelines and fail to protect workers against other dangerous hazards. Workers risk a lot going to work every day.

What does your town do to celebrate Labor Day? Many businesses close for the day to give workers a day to reflect, celebrate, and relax. Parades, speeches by local government officials, BBQs, and other activities are all ways that citizens celebrate. No matter what you and your family do this coming Monday, don’t forget to honor the workers that made it possible throughout the years, and the sacrifices they have made.
