As we continue to spread asbestos awareness alongside the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, we will touch on the third point that ADAO is choosing to focus on during Global Asbestos Awareness Week: increasing compliance and enforcement of existing laws and regulations.
Every day around the world, asbestos laws and regulations are broken by individuals of all kinds. Even professionals who are trained in handling and preventing asbestos exposure are found to disregard protocol to save time and money.
Here are some ways individuals can follow existing asbestos regulations:
Provide Proper Protections for Workers Who Handle Asbestos
Employers can comply and enforce existing asbestos exposure regulations to protect workers who must handle materials and products containing the substance. Protective gear, including respirators, eyewear, coveralls, boots, gloves, and other products help protect workers from airborne asbestos fibers.
Properly Handle and Dispose of Asbestos Materials
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has strict guidelines to follow when removing and disposing of the hazardous substance. If they are not followed, guilty parties in the United States are often given a fine to pay. It is questionable whether the fines are high enough, considering asbestos is so dangerous.
Banning Asbestos Worldwide
We believe that banning asbestos completely is the perfect way to ensure that no one’s health is put at risk by broken laws and regulations. Today, several countries have implemented asbestos bans. The United States is not one of them.
