New AI Tool May Improve Diagnosis of Pleural Effusion and Help Identify Pleural Cancer

A pleural effusion is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural space, the thin area between the lungs and the chest wall. Normally, this space has a small amount of lubricating fluid, but diseases can cause that fluid to build up which compresses the lungs and can make breathing difficult.
Types of Pleural Effusions and Their Common Causes
Pleural effusions can be either transudative or exudative. Transudative effusions occur when pressure imbalances cause fluid to leak into the pleural space and are most commonly associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disease. Exudative effusions result from inflammation, infection, or malignancy that increases pleural membrane permeability. Common causes include pneumonia, tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism and cancer.
Pleural Effusion Symptoms and How It Is Diagnosed
The most common symptoms are breathlessness, chest pain, and a persistent dry cough. Additional symptoms often reflect the underlying disease, such as fever with infection or weight loss with cancer. Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies, including chest X-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans, along with thoracentesis, a procedure used to obtain pleural fluid for laboratory analysis.
Treatment Options for Pleural Effusion
Treatment focuses on both relieving symptoms and addressing the underlying cause. Management may include medications such as diuretics or antibiotics, therapeutic thoracentesis, chest tube drainage, pleurodesis, or indwelling pleural catheters.
Pleural Effusion, Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure
Pleural effusions can be an important indicator of serious illness. In addition to common causes, it highlights mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the pleural lining strongly associated with asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma characteristically causes a progressive exudative pleural effusion, often serving as its most prominent clinical feature. Because the presence of pleural effusions may signal conditions ranging from heart failure to advanced cancer, prompt evaluation and identification of the underlying cause are essential for appropriate treatment and improved patient outcomes.
